Short answer
The dealer appraises your car and that value comes off what you pay for the next one. In California, sales tax is charged on the full price of the car you buy, with no credit for the trade. If you still owe money, the dealer pays off your lender and the difference is settled in your purchase.

Frequently asked questions
Does a trade-in reduce sales tax in California?
No. California calculates sales tax on the full selling price of the car you buy, without subtracting the trade-in value.
Can I trade in a car I am still paying off?
Yes. The dealer pays off your loan. If the car is worth more than you owe, the difference goes toward your purchase; if it is worth less, you cover the difference.
What if I owe more than my car is worth?
You cover the difference, in cash or added to the new financing if the lender approves, which makes the new loan bigger.
What documents do I need to trade in my car?
The title if the car is paid off, or your loan details if not; the registration; your driver's license; and every key.
What affects my trade-in value?
Mechanical and body condition, mileage and model year, accident history and title status, service records, whether every key and remote is there, and how much demand there is for that model today.
Would I get more selling it myself?
A private sale can bring more money, but it takes time: listings, meeting strangers, getting paid safely and the paperwork. In California the seller of a used car generally provides the smog certificate. A trade-in is done in one visit.
Which sales-tax rate do I pay?
The rate for the address where you register the car, not the dealer's. Silvio sells in English and Spanish and walks you through the appraisal and every line of the contract.
